What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a chatbot built by OpenAI that is notable for having been the first AI language model to be adopted by users worldwide when it was released in November 2022. It was the fastest-growing consumer application in history.

People have used ChatGPT and similar LLM-based chatbots to perform a wide variety of tasks. They have replaced some uses of search engines such as Google Search, improving on them by allowing interactivity and personalization.

ChatGPT can be viewed as a user-friendly interface for OpenAI’s various models, including the image generation model DALL-E. The first iteration of ChatGPT was built on top of GPT-3.5, and after the greatly improved GPT-4 was released, ChatGPT allowed premium users to use it instead.
