What is the UN AI Advisory Body?

In October 2023, the United Nations formed a “High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence”. The body currently consists of 39 people, including experts with experience in government, academia, and major tech companies, such as Jaan Tallinn (cofounder of CSER) and Mira Murati (CTO of OpenAI).

As of November 2023, the body plans to produce an interim report on AI governance options at the end of 2023, followed by a final report mid-2024 ahead of the September 2024 Summit of the Future. At this summit, UN member states will consider and negotiate the Global Digital Compact, which the Body’s recommendations are expected to influence.
